Key Biscayne is a barrier island with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and Biscayne Bay on the other. It was once the home of the Tequesta Indians. With its history, its fragility as a barrier island and its connection to the Everglades whose fresh water once emptied freely into Biscayne Bay, Biscayne Nature Center is a symbol of the loss of our natural systems and the struggle of adaptation to maintain what we have.
