Performance and Site

Andrea Beeman (a collaboration with movement & sound by Andrea Beeman, Sara Bouchard, Briar Chatterjea & Saadia Rais) presents a site-specific offering at Tredegar Street Boat Ramp & Beach, 415 Tredegar St, Richmond, VA.

Collaborating Artists

The performance features Andrea Beeman, Sara Bouchard, Briar Chatterjea, and Saadia Rais, each bringing practices in movement, sound, composition, landscape, and education.

Artistic Intent

Through subtle percussive and sparkling sounds, delicate mandolin manipulation, voices, and flowing movements that resonate with the site, the artists invite reflection on how we are interconnected by the water around us and within our bodies.

Water Issues

The project highlights Richmond’s outdated combined sewer system, one of three such cities in Virginia and the largest in the state. During wet weather, stormwater can overwhelm system capacity, causing overflows that release untreated wastewater and stormwater into the James River and Gillies Creek, introducing bacteria and pollutants that make the waterways unsafe.

Call to Stewardship

With an interactive offering on April 18th, the collaborators aim to inspire more sensitive stewardship of the Powhatan (James) River and awareness of the infrastructures and practices that affect its health.
