Introduction
MAMA BI presents a site-specific practice in Wheaton, Maryland focused on the environmental conditions at Brookside Gardens. This post summarizes the context, water concerns and collaborators engaged in advocacy and creative response.
Background
On March 3, 2005, Montgomery Parks approved a master plan and initiated renovations for Brookside Gardens. As a result of implementation, pond locations were moved and altered within the site.
Water Issues
Since the master plan changes, the ponds now show increased algae and accumulation of harmful materials and pollution. The master plan is also connected with the Rock Creek sewer, raising concerns about long-term water quality and ecosystem health.
Artistic and Practical Perspective
MAMA BI shares a practical note: ‘Sometimes it is easier, better and costs less money, to do smaller projects and not a master plan.’ This perspective informs both creative programming and community engagement around pond restoration.
Collaborators
Collaborators on this initiative include: tentatively Eleanor Carlow.
