Laura Orozco Garrett (Keshet Dance Company) — Albuquerque performance for the Rio Grande

Project Overview

Under the leadership of Laura Orozco Garrett and Keshet Dance Company and Center for the Arts in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a group of intergenerational movers will perform to honor and advocate for the Rio Grande River. The piece responds to the river running historically dry as a result of higher average daily temperatures, extended periods of drought, low level of snowpack and the accelerating impacts of climate change.

Collaborators and Community

Participants include movers from the Keshet community and the greater Albuquerque area. We have collaborated with Youth United for Climate Crisis Action (YUCCA) and the Rio Grande Sierra Club in selecting a site off the river and deepening our understanding of local water insecurities.

Artistic Approach

The choreography centers on presence, memory and stewardship: “We will honor our river, dance for our river, and fight for our river one step at a time.” The performance is both a ceremonial acknowledgment of what the river has provided and an artistic witness to what is at risk.

Get Involved

Community members are invited to witness, learn and connect with local advocacy efforts addressing water scarcity and climate resilience. The project foregrounds intergenerational participation and accessibility across abilities.
